The SEI outreach program presents information about space systems engineering careers to high school students, parents, counselors, and math and science teachers. The goal of the program is threefold:
- To educate parents, teachers, and counselors about careers in space systems;
- To interest high school students in space engineering careers; and
- To interest high school students in engineering at Texas A&M University.
The students participate in one outreach activity per semester. These activities range from making presentations at local or hometown high schools to tutoring younger students in math and science courses to participating in engineering conferences put on by the Texas A&M Look College of Engineering. The younger students benefit from the presentations because they are exposed early on to the exciting opportunities offered by careers in engineering, specifically space engineering. The SEI students benefit by gaining experience not only in making technical presentations but also in sharing their experiences with younger generations in order to spark their interest in the fields of science and engineering.
Ongoing Programs
SEI Legotics
The Space Engineering Institute, in partnership with Bryan Collegiate High School, has created a junior SEI team comprising of ten high school freshman. The students are currently working to put together robots of their own creating using LEGO Mindstorms NXT kits. This activity provides the students with a fun and interesting opportunity to complete their independent research projects required by their curriculum, and it comes with the added bonus of interacting with engineering students currently involved in the main SEI program.
