STP Team

Based on the SEI success, we have received funding in Spring 2008 to extend the program to non-NASA areas. Funds from the Texas Nuclear Workforce Development Initiative are supporting an interdisciplinary undergraduate team working on an applied project with Texas South Project.

Project Summmary

Overheating of electronics in EAB, room 318, is one of the greatest risks to plant production, however insufficient information exists on the kinetics and spatial distribution of heat transfer in the event of HVAC failure. Additionally, direct situational thermodynamic analyses are difficult to obtain from the EAB room.

Objective
  • Create a parallel experimental and simulation in order to accurately predict the thermal evolution of the Switchgear in Room 318 during partially or total HVAC system failure.
Tasks
  • Produce a scaled down experimental model from the appropriate scaling laws that portrays operating conditions in the switchgear room

  • Prepare a simulation of the scaled down model

  • Record temperature data in the Envrionmental Chamber and compare results to the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in FlowWorks

  • Prepare a simulation of the switchgear room heating up in different HVAC conditions using SolidWorks/CosmosFloWorks

  • Develop a mathematical model that both simplifies the analysis and conservatively estimates heat transfer under the switchgear room’s HVAC failure conditions

  • Prepare presentations for STP to validate accuracy of methods
