Project Summmary

Commonly used electric motors currently provide high torque at the expense of size and weight that prove to be unfavorable for many applications.

Objective
  • Identify a design and create a prototype for a rotary action motor capable of providing high torque while remaining compact through the use of shape memory alloys.
Tasks
  • Become familiar with uses and limitations of shape memory alloys
  • Identify ratchet mechanism designs to utilize shape memory alloys
  • Construct and evaluate mechanism against similar designs not utilizing SMAs
