Project Summmary
Commonly used electric motors currently provide high torque at the expense of size and weight
that prove to be unfavorable for many applications.
Objective
Identify a design and create a prototype for a rotary action motor capable of providing high
torque while remaining compact through the use of shape memory alloys.
Tasks
Become familiar with uses and limitations of shape memory alloys
Identify ratchet mechanism designs to utilize shape memory alloys
Construct and evaluate mechanism against similar designs not utilizing SMAs
